Removing paint from any type of surface, including wood, is a time-consuming task. However, the task can be simplified by using certain techniques. These techniques are very effective and allow for simple stripping of paint from wooden surfaces such as doors, furniture and skirting boards. For large areas it is often a good idea to hire a professional paint stripper. Nevertheless, homeowners can embark on these tasks themselves if they are careful and plan what they are doing.

The following tips are very good for removing paint from wooden surfaces:

Move the wooden item, in the case of furniture or similar, to a clear, flat area where it is safe to work. For fixtures and fittings such as window frames, make sure the surrounding area is clear and any items that aren't being stripped are covered up if they can't be moved.

Deciding the right method for removing paint is essential. Generally, people use sand paper or scrapers for this task. Though these methods are effective, they take a long time and a lot of physical effort to remove the paint completely. They also generate a lot of dust. Chemical paint strippers are popular, these are extremely effective on wooden surfaces. However some strippers are highly alkaline which can damage the surface of the wood. Some chemical strippers contain hazardous ingredients so care should be taken to select the right product. It is essential that the instructions on the paint stripper are followed correctly.

Heat guns and blowtorches can damage a wooden surface, so if this method is used care must be taken. This technique is often best left to the professionals.

Having patience is a critical factor for the success of this task. Paint stripping can be a time consuming and physical task. It is also very messy. Even chemical strippers can take a long time, particularly if there are a numbers of paint layers to remove, or the paint has been applied thickly.

You must consider the impact of the paint stripper you are using on yourself and the environment.

A Discussion on Various Paint Removal techniques

Home renovation is an important part of standard living at the present moment and people often take up this task once in 3-4 years. Though the home gets a great look after the task has been completed successfully, various steps involved in the task can be quite technical and important to follow. Apart from selecting the right shade of color for the home and the right finish, it is important to think about how the old coatings are going to be removed.

If you are planning to take up the task of renovating your home, you should think carefully about using the best paint stripping methods for the surface and paint type that you are removing – such as wood, plaster or metal.

Sanding: This is the most traditional method of removing paint from all surfaces. Sandpapers of various grades can be used depending upon the paint thickness and underlying surface. This method liberates a large amount of dust that users can inhale quite easily. They are advised to use masks while using sand papers.

Heat Gun/ Blowtorch: The basic technique behind a blowtorch or heat gun is similar. Both these tools use heat to loosen the grip of the paint from the surface, it is especially effective on wood and metal pieces. Care should be taken not to burn or damage the underlying surface. The users must rotate the face of the heat gun or the blowtorch above the area so that the heat is spread across the surface area.

Chemical paint stripper: This is the common way of removing paint from wood and metals. As the name itself indicates, this paint remover is made up of various types of chemicals. This type of product is usually effective on most paints. However, they can be harmful for the user and the environment.. Professional contractors should be hired if large areas are to be stripped using this type of product as a certain amount of safety and security measures are generally required with these products.

Water-based paint stripper: This is the safest paint removal method, these products are water based and contain a blend of natural materials. They are effective on most paint types and do not damage the underlying surface. These products are suitable for use by the home owner as they do not require any specialist safety or security measures

How Water Based Paint Strippers are Safer for Everyone

Removing any type of paint is a crucial task that can cause a great deal of anxiety. This is mainly because of the harmful and toxic nature of conventional paint stripping products. Many products are both harmful to the user and the environment. Many painting contractors use these types of product. This can put them at risk from breathing in vapours or spilling the product on their skin, causing burns. The effects of these paint strippers can be harmful for the homeowners too and they may also breathe in vapours unless windows are kept open and the area fully ventilated. Therefore, the use of more modern, safer, water based paint strippers is becoming more and more common.

Selecting the right paint stripping product for the job is a challenge faced by most contractors these days. Finding a product with the right safety profile that will strip the paint in a reasonable amount of time is paramount.. There are a large number of paint stripping products available at the moment, and the use of water based products is increasing rapidly. The main reasons for this popularity can be estimated as below:

Safer for the Environment: Water based strippers are made with a blend of natural ingredients that are effective at removing all types of paints. This type of paint stripper uses water as the base solvent and is safer than traditional products which contained methylene chloride. These strippers are not classified as hazardous and have little or no smell. They are suitable for use in confined areas.

Effective formulation: Though this type of paint stripper uses water as its base solvent, it is very effective on all types of paints. Its ability to strip paint comes from careful blending of a range of natural, or safer, raw materials. Products of this type do not damage the surface beneath the paint, and are usually safe to use on plastics.

Non-inflammable and Biodegradable: The components of this type of paint remover are non flammable and biodegradable by nature, this is why they are better for the environment and user than traditional methylene chloride containing products. When using any chemical product it is always a good idea to wear protective coveralls, however with water based strippers there is no need to be concerned about breathing in vapours, or working in confined spaces.

Availability: These products are readily available from DIY stores and web shops. There are usually good stocks available as they have a long shelf life.

The popularity of these water based products is growing and looks likely to increase in the future as more people are made aware of the safety benefits of these products.

Reliable Paint Stripping Methods

This is the time that many people start to think about repainting these items so they return to their former glory. Of course as well as looking impressive, a fresh layer of paint also offers maximum protection against bumps and scratches. However, before items can be repainted the existing paint should be removed or rubbed down, particularly if it is peeling off or has been chipped. Many paint-stripping methods are available these days. Most of these methods are good and effective. However, the users must know and note that not all paint strippers are suitable for every surface. They should be applied on specific surfaces only.

The common as well as reliable paint stripping methods are as follows:

Sanding: This is the most common method for paint stripping at home. This is carried out with different grades of sandpaper. Since sandpaper is fairly cheap and readily available from DIY stores it is very popular. This method can be used on both wood and metal surfaces. It is also a useful technique for intricate areas. Sanding can be quite destructive to the underlying surface, particularly if a rough sandpaper is used. Sandpaper should not be used on delicate items that could be easily damaged.

Chemical Paint stripper: The use of chemical paint strippers is very popular when there are large areas to be stripped as it is less physically demanding, It is also a useful method of stripping if the substrate is likely to be damaged by sanding. Many of the chemical strippers available contain hazardous materials, so care should be taken when using them.

Artex Remover: Getting rid of Artex can be a difficult as well as a risky task as some older Artex contains asbestos fibres which are harmful if inhaled. Specialist Artex Removal products should be used which convert the softened artex to a gel, preventing any fibres from escaping. The use of Artex Removal products is increasing these days as more and more people are removing it from their homes.

Water-based Paint stripper: This type of a paint stripper is safer than the traditional methylene chloride based products as it uses water, not a hazardous solvent as its base solvent. These strippers are effective at removing most paint types from a wide range of substrates, including plastics.

Most of these paint-stripping methods are used by professional decorators and paint strippers. These people understand the implications of what they are doing and know what type of stripping product is best suited to the job in hand.

However, the last removal is done with the help of soap and water only.

It removes multiple layers of paints in minimum numbers of application. That makes these strippers economic by nature. These strippers are capable of removing the paints faster than chemical paint strippers too.

Every paint stripper is made with non-chemical and natural ingredients that makes them safer for use. The skin gets no irritation or any other unpleasant feeling even if the skin gets exposed to the industrial paint stripper.

The paints strippers are totally biodegradable. They leave no harmful effects on the surroundings. The best thing about these strippers is that they do not harm to anyone even if some quantity of these strippers is left unattended.

Pricing is yet another advantage for the users of these paint removers. When compared to the traditional paint removers, the users find these removers easy to afford as far as pricing is concerned.

MORE people than ever are turning their fireplaces into a thing of real, traditional beauty with the installation of a wood-burning stove. And their garden equivalent, the Chiminea, is proving just as popular as people look to add that extra bit of class to their barbecue or summer garden.

But many people don't realise the dangers and risks of buying Chimineas and wood-burning stoves from around the world.

Many Chimineas and wood-burning stoves are imported from China and South America.
That's where Biostrip 20 comes in.

STEP 4 – simply scrape or rinse the now-softened sheets of paint. If any paint remains, repeat the process.

STEP 5 – wash down and allow to dry thoroughly

Now the Chiminea or wood-burning stove is ready to repaint.

Here's how it's done

STEP 1 – use a spray paint specifically designed for wood stoves/Chimineas. You can find this at most paint and/or DIY shops. Bring the can of paint to room temperature before use. Shake the can of paint for about two minutes to thoroughly mix it. Spray the paint on a piece of cardboard to ensure that it is thoroughly mixed and spraying correctly

STEP 2 – hold the can of spray paint 12 inches from the stove. If you hold it too close to the stove, the paint will puddle and run. Holding it too far away will cause the paint to dry spray and give a textured look

STEP 3 – press down the spray nozzle and paint in one continuous motion, working from left to right. Release the tip and repeat that section if necessary. Avoid continuously holding down the spray nozzle or painting in a circular motion. Release the spray nozzle each time you complete a secion

OUR latest customer report showing Biostrip in action deals with the once-tricky task of removing paint from plaster.

Customer Paul O'brien purchased Biostrip 20 for a tricky job on his 150 year-old house.

He told us: "The house has many mouldings around the ceilings that over the years have been painted and re-painted. I was wanting to strip them back so that when I decorate, the details of the mouldings will be seen better."

So How Did Biostrip Do?

Paul added: "I am more than impressed with the results. I have two upright mouldings and I was unsure how I could remove the paint without destroying the plaster.

"The Biostrip began working within 10 minutes and the paint began to blister. I left the Biostrip on for one hour and using a shave hook removed the loose paint from the mouldings.

"I repeated this process two further times. The next time I applied Biostrip I was able to use a toothbrush and water to scrub/wash away the paint and then use a wooden BBQ skewer to pick the paint and stripper out of the detail."

Paul now says he couldn't be happier with the results.

"I can't say enough to praise your product and the service I received from you after placing my order."

BIOSTRIP are encouraging all of our customers to spare whatever they can for a worthwhile cause - the Ghana Project 2013.

Jess Hartopp, 15, is one of the charitable teens helping to raise much-needed cash for the development of new schools in the rural areas of Ghana, West Africa.

What is Ghana Outlook?

The charity was formed in 2000. With the help of many individuals and organisations, they have been able to provide numerous schools, fresh water supplies, libraries and other essential aid to the poor rural areas of Ghana.

Ghana Outlook believes in projects that help communities to help themselves, and leave an end result that is sustainable in the long term.

Of course, these vital projects cost time and money, and often it is simply the generosity of individuals and organisations that enable Ghana Outlook to commit to the projects.

Biostrip Ltd sponsor Cheshire Fire Cadet

Cheshire Fire and Rescue service is committed to developing young people and has a number of very successful youth engagement programmes, including Fire Cadet Units.

The cadets make a positive contribution to the community through activities such as fitting smoke alarms for members of the public, supporting local initiatives such as lutter picks and car boot sales.

The Cadets work very closely with Ghana Outlook. In Summer 2013, Cadets from Cheshire will be travelling to Ghana to help build another school.

But before they go, they must each raise £3000 to contribute towards the materials required for construction.

Biostrip are sponsoring Jess and helping her where possible to raise money for this worthy cause.

If you would like to support Jess and all her hard work, then it couldn't be easier. Every penny really does help, no matter what size the donation, and literally every penny you pledge will go directly to Jess' appeal.

Water-based Paint Stripper - how they work

Water-based strippers - why the demand for them?

PAINT strippers are the generic name given to chemical blends designed to remove paint and other finishes from a variety of substrates such as wood, metal, brick, concrete, etc. Paint strippers can also be used for cleaning paint application tools such as brushes, rollers, and spray guns.

Traditional paint strippers have primarily been based upon various solvent mixtures, the principal one being dichloromethane. These products will strip a wide variety of paint types and generally have little impact upon the substrate over which the paint lies. Their biggest disadvantage lies in their toxicity. Dichloromethane itself is in the process of being severely restricted throughout the EU because of its toxicity.

Changes for customers - and for industry

Over the last few years, a lot of effort has gone into substituting 'safe' solvents, such as dibasic esters and dimethyl sulfoxide for dichloromethane with various levels of success. However, in general these materials are derived from petroleum, and hence are not renewable nor have a carbon-neutral footprint.

Principles behind the technology

The principle of water-based paint stripping is entirely different to solvent-based strippers. Water-based strippers rely on an organic (solvent) component to penetrate the paint layer, and carry with it the water, which normally carries the active stripping agent. When the water reaches the interface between paint and substrate, the active ingredient in the water breaks the bond between paint and substrate and the paint falls off. In general, the paint is not affected by the stripper and simply falls off in large sheets.

This action of water-based strippers has several advantages:

The paint is not generally affected, hence harmful materials contained in the paint will not be released into the environment.

Since the stripper does not attack the paint, it is not depleted in the stripping process. This is particularly advantageous in a stripping bath, where very long bath lives can be achieved, dramatically improving process economics

The paint substrate is generally much more impervious to water than it is to solvent and so very little penetration of the stripper into the substrate occurs. This makes cleaning the substrate after stripping often easier and quicker than if a solvent stripper is used

In general, water-based strippers are not so sensitive to different paint types as solvent-based ones.

Removing Paint from Alloy Wheels; quickly and safely...

IN the past, the favoured methods of stripping paint from alloy wheels has been either by shot blasting (expensive) or using solvent-based and highly acidic paint strippers (very dangerous to use and now the subject of a Europe-wide trade ban due to an EEC ruling).

Biostrip Alloy Wheel Cleaner is a safer, fast alternative

The product is very effective at stripping a wide variety of paints and laquers from alloy wheels, and the process couldn't be quicker or easier.

Stripping Alloy Wheels with Biostrip:

Immerse the wheel in the Biostrip solution, at 60 C or above for two to three hours (might take slightly longer depending upon wheel manufacturer)

Once immersed, the fast-acting fomula will begin working immediately to remove the top coat from the wheel, once removed it will start work on the notoriously difficult OEM primer.

The paint will be removed in large sheets which can be filtered or strained from the stripper solution

All that remains is to rinse the wheel, wipe it clean, and it's ready to repaint

NOTE:

OEM primers will not normally strip below temperatures of 60C

Do NOT strip steel parts alongside alloy wheels.

Benefits of stripping your Alloy Wheels with Biostrip:

Takes as little as 2 HOURS to strip

No need for costly additives

Contains no methylene chloride

Zero sludge formation; so no costly filter press required

How to Completely Strip Paint from Metal in as little as 20 Minutes...

ONE of the more common questions we get asked about the Biostrip range is - what's it like on metals?

The short answer is that its great on metals; Biostrip will strip a wide variety of paint finishes, including fusion-dried powder coats, tricky stuff like Hammerite paints and two-pack epoxy's, as well as modern water-based automotive-type paints (especially the notoriously difficult-to-strip two-pack water-based auto finishes.)

There are two ways of approaching this job.

Firstly Biostrip 20 can be used. Simply brush the product on to the metal, wait until the paint has blistered or softened, then wash or scrape it off.

Or, for Industrial or large applications, Biostrip 42 Immersion Stripper can be used. As the name suggests, this product is for use in immersion tanks. It should be heated to around 25 C and the metal parts submerged.

Normally at temperatures above 25°C, a single coating of fusion-cured powder epoxy paint will take about 20 minutes to strip

Water-based two-pack automotive paints can strip in as little as 10 minutes, depending on the paint type and thickness

Really difficult coatings, such as MOD Nato-type paints, or things like Caterpillar yellow (used on diggers, etc) can take a bit longer, but usually no more than an hour

A typical domestic radiator with two coats of paint, a water-based electrocoat primer with a fusion-cured powder topcoat, normally takes about 20 minutes to strip both coats

IT'S easy to see when the paint has stripped from the parts as it blisters away from the metal surface in large sheets, which drop away from the part as it is removed from the Biostrip, or is easily washed off with water, eg, from a hosepipe.

Once the part has stripped, it needs rinsing with water to remove any residual stripper, as this would cause future paint applications to blister when applied.

Strip paint from radiators in just twenty minutes...

STRIPPING OEM paint from radiators can be a notoriously tricky job.

Commonly this is because radiators tend to have two coats of paint. These are a water-based electrocoat primer and a fusion-bonded, powder paint topcoat.

The most difficult layer of these to remove tends to be the water-based primer. This is because most traditional solvent-based paint strippers will not attack modern water-based paints.

How to remove OEM paint from radiators with Biostrip - in just twenty minutes

Method One - in the home

Simply grab a clean brush, and paint the radiator with Biostrip 20. Be sure to also paint inside all those tricky corners and creases. After around 20 minutes, you will be able to see that the paint has blistered all over. At this point, you can easily scrape off the blistered paint. On doing this, you will see that the Biostrip will have easily penetrated both layers of paint. Scraping will reveal a clean, paint-free radiator; stripped back to its original, pre-painted state.

All that remains is to wash the radiator thoroughly with soapy water, followed by clean, fresh water. Allow the radiator time to dry and then simply repaint it.

Method Two - for industry

An even easier method (although not suitable for home stripping) to remove all the paint from the radiator is to dip it in a tank of Biostrip 42 heated to around 25 C until the paint has fully blistered.

NOTE: The above methods and timings are for OEM painted radiators. Radiators that have been subsequently coated with gloss or extra layers of radiator paint may take longer and need more than one application.

Stripping paint from Window Frames with Biostrip

WHETHER the frame is wood, UPVC or aluminium, removing paint from a window frame can be a tricky, messy business.

All too often, the paint may be removed only to reveal that you've damaged the under-surface during the process.

Other times, the under-surface may be fine, but annoying flecks of paint get left behind; spoiling the overall finished appearance when the job is completed and your new paint is applied.

Traditional methods such as sanding, scraping, using DCM chemical strippers or heat guns, all damage the under surface, and take a long time to complete the job.

Biostrip Paint Stripper is fast becoming the global alternative to solvent-based paint strippers. Proven in bench tests to work faster than traditional products, it removes every trace of paint without causing any damage to the under-surface, whether its aluminium, wood or UPVC.

Using Biostrip to remove paint from window frames

Brush on a generous layer of Biostrip, ensuring that the treated surfaces remain wet and don't dry out

Allow the paint to blister - this takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the thickness of the paint and the nu,ber of layers

Next, either rinse or scrape to remove the softened coating

Repeat the process if any coating remains

Wash area and allow to dry thoroughly before repainting

Coverage

500g will cover up to 3m²

Tips for getting the best out of Biostrip

For a faster strip time, scuff or scribe the surface lightly before applying Biostrip

Gently use wire wool to remove softened varnish in awkward corners and/or profiles

If the paint to be removed is several layers thick, a second coat of Biostrip might be required (however, laboratory tests and responses from customers show that, more often than not, Biostrip will work its way through several layers of paint at one time, meaning just one application might be necessary even for tougher jobs

How to get rid of Graffiti - indoors or out

WHETHER it's paint sprayed on house walls, garages and fences outside the home, or ink and paint daubed indoors by children, the problem of graffiti always comes down to how to remove it, effectively and safely.

The internet is flooded with tips, hints and guides that all claim to show you the best way to get rid of graffiti.

But these methods are littered with pitfalls; hours of scrubbing, toxic fumes, protective gear, spillages that cause damage to pets, children and your environment - all hinder your progress.

The beauty of Biostrip is that it immediately eliminates all of these pitfalls, leaving you with a job well done, and none of the headaches.

So to remove the graffiti quickly and cleanly, Biostrip has two fantastic products available: Biostrip 42 Graffiti Pre-Clean and Biostrip 42 Graffiti Remover

Preparing the surface

This can be vital because often the graffiti will be covered with a layer of oil or grease, which can prevent the actual graffiti remover from working properly.

If this is the case, simply apply Biostrip 42 Graffiti Pre-Clean (if no oil or grease is coating the graffiti, there is no need to use this application and you can skip to the next step). Allowing the Pre-Clean to soak in will give you a massive head start on removing the actual graffiti.

Removing the graffiti

Biostrip 42 Graffiti Removal is a revolutionary new water-based system that is safer for users, pets, plants and the environment. It is widely used around the home by DIY enthusiasts, and also by graffiti removal contractors who are interested in protecting the environment.

Make sure that the Biostrip Graffiti Remover completely covers the affected surface area, allow plenty of time for it to soak in. If it starts to dry out, for example on a hot day, apply a further coat.

The next step is to scrub the area to remove the graffiti and restore it to its former glory then wash down with fresh water. Further applications may be necessary if the graffiti is extensive or quite old.

Instructions for Use

Whatever you are trying to strip, the following instructions can be used when stripping with Biostrip 20

Using Biostrip

Clean off any dust, grease or loose material from the painted surface

Brush a generous layer of Biostrip on to the surface

Allow the paint to blister or soften (water based and poorly cured paints tend to soften rather than blister). This should take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the paint type, coating thickness, and number of paint layers. Temperature will also influence stripping time (for example, strip times on external work are generally much faster on a hot day)

Do not allow Biostrip to dry out. Apply more if this starts to happen

Remove softened coating by either rinsing, scraping or power-washing

Wash the area thoroughly with fresh water and dry fully before applying any new coating

Please note -

Some coatings soften rather than blistering, particularly water-based coatings and emulsions. Artex remover forms a gel-like substance that can be safely removed without the risk of asbestos release.

More tips

For an even faster strip time, scribe or scuff the surface before applying Biostrip

Use wire wool to remove softened paint in awkward corners and profiles

Although Biostrip does not evaporate, some customers have made the comment that covering Biostrip in cling-film speeds up strip time

Removing Artex just got a lot easier...

Traditionally, artex contains asbestos.

This asbestos is completely harmless as long as it is on the wall or ceiling, but chipping or scraping it away releases the dangerous asbestos fibres in the form of a dust. Once airborne, this dust can be - and often is - fatal if inhaled. For these reasons, traditionally, the removal of artex was a long process that could only be carried out by professionals with the correct protective equipment.

Introducing Biostrip Artex Remover - a revolution in Artex removal:

Biostrip Artex Remover unique formula completely softens the artex so it can be removed without forming a dust - and with zero risk of damage to you, your family and your environment.

What Biostrip Artex Remover assures you:

Proven Performance - we supply to a number of contractors who buy this product on a monthly basis

Fast Acting

Completely safe for users - no protective gear or ventilation needed

Water-based - no chemicals or toxins

Fume Free - won't fill your room with hazardous or noxious fumes

Suitable Substrates:

Any artex, whether subsequently coated with gloss or emulsion paints. If there are several coats of paint over the artex, more than one application of Artex Remover may be necessary to remove all of the artex coating.

Directions for Use:

APPLY...Biostrip Artex Remover generously onto artexed areas. Allow to soften and form a gel (1 to 2 hours)

REMOVE...gelled artex by scraping. Repeat process as necesary

WASH...the area down and allow it to dry thoroughly
